Why is a fall guy called a "patsy"?

: patsy origin

Why: Patsy is a girl's name (except in Once Upon a Time in America).

Answer: Possibly an alteration of Italian pazzo, "madman," from paccio, "fool." Another theory traces it to Patsy Bolivar, character in an 1880s minstrel skit (played by Billy B. Van) who was blamed whenever anything went wrong.
